Start your day with a relaxing trip through the Lofer stone mountains in the Berchtesgarden region. Via Bad Reichenhall, you will find yourself in the celebrated city of Salzburg with its charming surroundings, as well as the world famous centre of baroque architecture.
Salzburg is described as “the northern Rome“. Its wide squares, narrow alleys, churches and monasteries, castles and palaces, surrounded by formal gardens and parks, lend a certain southern flair; watched over by the 900-year-old unconquered castle the ‘Festung Hohensalzburg’.
Stroll through the old city and experience the unique atmosphere of the ‘Getreidegasse’, travel with the funicular railway to the ‘Hohensalzburg’ and soak up the magnificent views.
Baroque Museum – Salzburger Barockmuseum
The Salzburg Baroque Museum displays high-class examples of many monumental works of art from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Boat Trip – Salzburg Schiffahrt
Experience the wonderful views of the celebrated silhouette of the city and its surroundings from the water. The good ship ‘Amadeus’ is just waiting to take you on a magical trip.
Brew World – Stiegl’s Brauwelt
Visit Stiegl’s Brew World and discover the secrets of the thousand-year-old cultural beverage that is beer. Europe’s only beer theme exhibition is housed in the Malt House, the oldest part of the Stiegl brewery.
Cathedral Museum – Dommuseum Zu Salzburg
The cathedral museum was created in 1974 and is situated in the southern oratorium and long passage of the cathedral, previously known as the ‘Gallery by Hof’. The exhibition displays the many treasures of the cathedral as well as curiosities of the prince’s chambers of art and wonder.
Getreidegasse
The heart of the old city is impressive in its uniqueness – elaborate shop signs, doorways, facades and squares provide the background for a vibrant shopping experience.
Horse Drawn Carriage Rides – Fiaker-Rundfahrten
Once the equivalent of today’s taxis, horse drawn carriages have now become a popular tourist attraction. A romantic ride through the alleys of the old city is ‘a must’ whilst visiting Salzburg.
House of Nature – Haus der Natur
The Salzburg House of Nature is a living museum in the middle of the old town. There are 80 exhibition rooms where some 300,000 annual visitors are constantly astonished, with interactive stations covering all manner of natural phenomena.
Mirabell Palace – Schloss Mirabell
Originally known as ‘Altenau’, the Mirabell Palace was constructed by Wolf Dietrichs for Salome Alt in 1606. Particular points of interest include the Engelsstiege (Angels’ Steps) by Raphael Donner, which lead to the Marmorsaal (Marble hall), celebrated as the most beautiful wedding hall of Central Europe. Mirabell’s formal gardens have statues representing characters from Greek mythology, as well as the “Zwergelgarten” (Garden of Dwarfs), the Baroque Museum and the Nature Theatre.
Mozart’s Birth House – Mozart’s Geburtshaus
Getreidegasse No. 9 is where the Leopold Mozart family lived between 1747 and 1773. On the 27th January 1756, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here. Today the family’s flat is now a museum.
Mozart Square – Mozartplatz
Situated in the centre of Salzburg, this square is of particular interest due to the powerful statue of Mozart created by Ludwig von Schwanthaler in 1842. As well as this, many visitors gather to see the world famous Salzburg Glockenspiel (bells) that ring out daily from the Archbishop’s palace.
Museum Carolino Augusteum
The museum offers visitors a glance at the cultural development of the region from prehistoric to modern times. Created in 1834 by M.V. Süß as a city museum, named after its curator Caroline Auguste. On display are a number of valuable art treasures, including the Schnabelkanne by Dürrnberg. The museum lies directly opposite the House of Nature.
Residence – Residenz
A bishop’s palace in the Middle Ages, the Residenz took its current form in the 16th century and is now a powerful symbol of the early baroque era. You can visit both the official chambers and the Residence Gallery.
Residence Gallery – Residenzgalerie Salzburg
The Residence Gallery is a princely collection for the Salzburg region, presenting pieces from the rich baroque period and describing the way of life in ideal surroundings. As a result, the Residence Gallery has obtained an important position in the world of Salzburg art and culture.
Salzburg Fortress – Festung Hohensalzburg
The Festung Hohensalzburg, built in 1077 by the Archbischop Gebhard and extended by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach (1495-1519), is the largest fortress kept in its original state in Central Europe.
Salzburg Fortress Concerts – Salzburger Festungskonzerte
More than 300 concerts per year make the Salzburger Festungskonzerte one of the longest runs of chamber music concerts in the world.
Highly qualified musicians and internationally renowned soloists play the treasures of Salzburg’s favourite son: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
With the incomparable atmosphere of Festung Hohensalzburg, the powerful furnishings of the Prince’s Chambers and the awe-inspiring view of the city from the concert chamber, you are guaranteed to experience much more than a simple concert. St. Sebastian
When visiting the Church of St. Sebastian you can also find the Cemetery of Sebastian. Andrea Bertoleto designed this in 1600 in the style of a Campo Santo. Archbischop Wolf Dietrich, Mozart’s wife Constanze and his father Leopold, as well as the ‘godfather’ of modern medicine Paracelsus, were all laid to rest here.
The Sound of Music
Visitors from all over the world take advantage of the opportunity to see first-hand the places where the famous musical ‘The Sound of Music’ was filmed. The cult status of the film is particularly evident in Übersee, and many fans have life-long dreams of following in the footsteps of Maria.

Toy Museum – Spielzeugmuseum
With dolls’ houses, both old and new, miniature railways and paper theatres that are of special interest, there is much to enjoy. The toy museum also has a selection of optical toys and learning toys, with exhibits made of wood, clay and tin.
World of Marionettes – Welt der Marionetten
Meet face-to-face many historical marionettes of the world famous Salzburg Marionette Theatre. For instance, Papageno and Papagena from Mozart’s ‘Zauberflöte’ (Magic Flute), as well as many other examples from other European countries and Asia.
Zoo
The Salzburg Animal Park Hellbrunn offers the opportunity to see many Austrian and exotic species in their natural habitat. The ‘Zoolebensräume’ are made out of predominantly natural materials and are created specifically with the animals’ needs in mind, giving visitors the chance to observe how the animals interact socially.
