Autumn in Austria is one of the most beautiful times to visit Ramada Residences Saalfelden, and enjoy the amazing spectacle of the Almabtrieb Cattle Procession.

When early September comes (dates vary slightly from region to region), the spectacular cattle processions begin when the beasts amble back downhill from high summer pastures to graze on lower ground.

This joyous event, which dates back as far as the Middle Ages, marks the safe return of the cows back home and is celebrated widely throughout Austria.

The livestock are decorated with magnificent head dresses, garlands of flowers, bells and ribbons with processions of over 700 animals at a time, being led through the towns and villages. A true sight to behold, with a backdrop of the breath taking Alpine mountains, the Almabtrieb Cattle Procession should be on everyone’s bucket list.

There is much more to Almabtrieb than the morning cattle processions however.  Farmer’s markets are held to coincide with the event, along with stalls selling a delicious array of local food, drink and handicrafts. Spend the rest of the day joining in the festivities with music and folk dancing into the night.

If you are looking for an Alpine experience with a difference, check in to Ramada Residences Saalfelden for an exciting stay in the mountains.
